Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh, this place was not
exactly normal. As you can see, it was one of the most beautiful cities I've
been to. You can see the French influence everywhere in the architecture,
the food, and the coffee. Short, strong, and black. The location at the
confluence of the Tonle and Mekong rivers offers great views. It also has
it's darker side and it is very in your face. Plenty of beggars, child
prostitution, and crime.
It's hard not to think about the
past history of Phnom Penh. The population of Phnom Penh in 1975 was
2,000,000 and it is currently just over 800,000. The Khmer Rouge completely
evacuated Phnom Penh shortly after it fell on April, 17 1975. More history
in the S-21 and Killing field pics.
When we arrived in Phnom Penh,
we decided a hotel with a river front balcony would be nice. This was the
view outside out first hotel room. Not to
shabby for $20 a night. We soon figured it out. Directly below us was an all
night club, and as the sun set, the hookers came out.
This is a picture from the Foreign
Correspondence Club or FCC to our first room. I wish it would have turned
out better, but I'm sure you get the pictures. We were checked out of this
hotel within 30 minutes.
The bars clubs in Phnom Penh
The bar seen seems to be located
in the downtown area or the lakefront. We probably visited a dozen bars in
the downtown area including,
Shanghai,
Howie's,
the Cantina, and several unmemorable others. All of these bars had
plenty of girls working, which get old pretty quick. The one are in the
downtown area that was liked was the
Foreign
Correspondence Club or FCC. This place was a bit pricy for Cambodia, but
the food was outstanding, it offered
spectacular views, and no hookers!!
The lakefront area of Phnom Penh
is a typical stinky western back-packer area. Plenty of cheep beer, western
fare, drugs, and scammers. We found all of the bar here free of hookers and
most had quite nice lake front views. We even had a proper English dinner of
Bangers and Mash according to Francis.
We did have a nice time in Phnom
Penh, but were ready to leave after 2 days. After seeing the sights, the
harshness of the city was being to wears on person.
