The
Tunnels of Cu Chi and
The War Remnants Museum (Saigon)
The below is from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunnels_of_Cu_Chi These word are better
than mine.
The tunnels of Cu Chi
The tunnels of Cu Chi are an
immense network of connecting underground tunnels located in the Cu Chi
district of
Vietnam, and are part of a much larger network of tunnels that
underlie much of the country. The Cu Chi tunnels were the location of
several military campaigns during the
Vietnam War, and were the
Viet Cong base of operations for the
Tet Offensive in 1968.
The tunnels were used by Viet Cong
guerrillas as hiding spots during combat, as well as serving as
communication and supply routes, hospitals, food and weapon caches and
living quarters for numerous guerrilla fighters. The role of the tunnel
systems should not be underestimated in its importance to the Viet Cong
in resisting American operations and protracting the war, eventually
forcing the Americans into withdrawal.
My thoughts on Ch Chi
The tunnels were very cool,
but too small for Americans like me (by design). They even have a part they
have made bigger for tourist that Francis went through. I still didn't go. There
was some interesting stuff here. A tank, holes that B-52s left, and booby
traps. Our guide was Mr. Minh who fought in the war for the south
(with the USA). He was very good and had some good insight to the area.
Shooting an
M-60
One perk of visiting the Tunnels,
is the shooting range. For 18,000 Dong/Round, you can shoot the automatic
weapon of your choice, or at least the ones that are working and they have
ammo for. I threw down my 360,000 Dong for a chance to shoot an AK-47.
Unfortunately, I had to settle for an
M-60.
Apparently this was Rambo's gun of choice, according to Mr. Minh. I guess he
would know as good as anyone.
The War Remnants Museum
The War Remnants Museum (previously the Museum of American War Crimes)
has lots of pics and some old US war stuff captured by the North. A few
years ago, it was to be very anti-American,
but is probably fair today. They toned it down to lure in more Americans
with $$$. One sided (meaning the VC did some nasty things
and there is zero of anything there about the VC) but probably fair. I would
expect Jane Fonda's museum, would be much more distorted. |
